Halstead Reading Group with
Geoff Hutchinson, December 2006
Photo of members of the Halstead Reading Group with Geoff Hutchinson who gave a Christmas talk "What is Christmas?" at St. Margaret's Church on Tuesday 5th December 2006. This was the 3rd lecture that the group has arranged and each time we have had 55 - 75 guests attending. We started with a presentation by The Edith Nesbit Society as we in Halstead, have such a close connection with her. Our second lecture was on "The life of Rudyard Kipling" given by Geoff Hutchinson and he was so well received we decided to invitee him back last Christmas. The group has been going since July 2004 and every month the group has chosen a different book to read and discuss. Titles range from "David Copperfield", "Life of PI", "The Small Island" and many more. We meet in different members homes on the first Tuesday of each month at 9.30am for an hour and a half. In spite of the early start our discussions are lively and interesting!
Next meeting will be on Tuesday 2nd October 9.30am at Brenda Kverndal’s house discussing “The Savage Garden” by Mark Mills led by Jan.
On Tuesday 6th November we will discuss “Changing Places” by David Lodge led by Pat Lewis but we still need a venue so we’ll agree this next time.
By the time this is read 12 of the group will have gone on Friday 28th September 7.30pm to hear “Sarah Waters in conversation with John Mullan” This is the opening event of the Sevenoaks Literary Celebration and having read Sarah’s book “Fingersmith” we hope it will be interesting to meet her. This annual literary event runs through to 7th October and there are lots more interesting lectures and events taking place in and around Sevenoaks. Information can be picked up in the Library or Sevenoaks Bookshop.
If you'd like to join a Reading Group, we would be very happy to help set up another group perhaps at a different time of day or different day of the week so just give me a call. Jean Peel 01959 533180
